The Gokyo Renjo La Trek is a challenging 14-day Himalayan adventure that combines the stunning Gokyo Valley, Gokyo Ri and the spectacular Renjo La Pass in Nepal’s Everest region. The trek offers an excellent alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp route, taking you through remote valleys, glacial landscapes, turquoise mountain lakes, traditional Sherpa villages and high mountain passes.

The journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and follows the Dudh Koshi Valley toward Namche Bazaar, the cultural and trading center of the Khumbu region. From Namche, the trail heads toward Dole and Machhermo before reaching the beautiful Gokyo Valley. The turquoise Gokyo Lakes and surrounding Himalayan scenery create one of the most impressive landscapes in the Everest region.

One of the major highlights is the early morning ascent of Gokyo Ri, which provides panoramic views of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse and other surrounding peaks, weather permitting. After exploring Gokyo, the route crosses the Ngozumba Glacier and continues toward Thangnak before ascending the challenging Renjo La Pass at approximately 5,360 meters.

After crossing Renjo La, the trail descends toward Marlung and follows the remote Bhote Koshi Valley to Thame, a historic Sherpa village with strong cultural and mountaineering traditions. The trek then returns to Namche Bazaar and Lukla before the scenic flight back to Kathmandu.

Continue north along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges and passing through beautiful pine and rhododendron forests. The trail passes through Monjo and the Sagarmatha National Park entrance before crossing the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. From there, the route climbs steadily toward Namche Bazaar, with the first views of Everest and other Himalayan peaks possible from the trail. Namche is the main trading and cultural center of the Khumbu region.

Spend the day acclimatizing in Namche Bazaar to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. You can also explore the local market, Sherpa culture, monasteries and surrounding villages before returning to Namche for the night.

Leave Namche Bazaar and follow the trail toward the Gokyo Valley. The route initially climbs above the town before following a scenic mountain trail with panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Continue through rhododendron and pine forests, passing small settlements and yak grazing areas before gradually reaching Dole, a small mountain village surrounded by dramatic Himalayan scenery.

Continue north through the Gokyo Valley, following a trail that gradually climbs above the tree line. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with open mountain slopes, waterfalls, yak pastures and spectacular views of Cho Oyu and surrounding peaks. Pass through the small settlement of Luza before reaching Machhermo, an important stop on the route to Gokyo.

Trek toward Gokyo through the high-altitude valley, following the Dudh Koshi River and passing impressive glacial landscapes. Continue alongside the Ngozumba Glacier before arriving at Gokyo village, situated beside the third Gokyo Lake with spectacular mountain scenery.

Start early for the challenging hike to Gokyo Ri, one of the finest viewpoints in the Everest region. After enjoying the mountain scenery, descend back to Gokyo and spend the remainder of the day resting and exploring the lakeside village.

Leave Gokyo and retrace part of the trail toward the Ngozumba Glacier. The route crosses the glacier and follows a rugged trail through the high-altitude landscape toward Thangnak, also known as Dragnag. This shorter day allows trekkers to rest before the demanding crossing of Renjo La Pass.

Depending on the trekking plan and local conditions, stay near the Renjo La approach area to prepare for the early crossing of the pass the following day.

Descend through the remote Bhote Koshi Valley, following an ancient trading route between Tibet and Nepal. The trail passes through traditional villages, Buddhist mani walls, prayer flags and alpine landscapes before reaching Thame, one of the historic Sherpa settlements of the Khumbu region. Thame is also associated with famous mountaineers and provides an opportunity to experience a quieter side of the Everest region.
